Tips for Packing Up Your Home + Moving

We get it, moving can be a tricky balancing act—there’s a lot of excitement mixed with anxiety. From finding a new home to getting your current living quarters packed up and ready to go, there are many moving pieces.

Fortunately, you don’t have to do it alone.

We’ve helped dozens of families make big moves and gathered a number of tips and tricks that make the process WAY less intimidating and stressful.

Here are our top recommendations:

01. Donate or sell first

Any furniture or items you don't love or need, should be among the first things to go! Facebook Marketplace is your friend here!

02. Get multiple quotes

Whether you’re renting a truck or hiring a moving company, make sure to get a few different price options before you commit. This may give you some room to negotiate as well. If you're using a moving company, make sure the reviews are good and have longevity! Be sure to also receive an in-person or zoom walk-through estimate so you can be sure that they're providing an accurate quote (and won't try to add on additional fees later!).

03. Use a Packing Calculator

Not sure how many boxes you’ll need? No problem. Calculators, like this one, can help you get an idea of how much packing supplies you’ll want to buy, so you’re not running back and forth to get more.

04. Hire a move manager

We can put you in touch with the right person for this! If you’re overwhelmed with the idea of having to decide what should stay or what should go, then this service might be just what you need. We’ve found that move managers are especially helpful for clients with young kids or those who’ve accumulated lots of memories. Move managers are there to help you declutter and organize so you don’t have to do.it.all…if you have enough stuff, the extra money involved may be worth it to save yourself stress, time, and effort.

05. Set goals for unboxing

Once the boxes have landed in your new home, try to work a little at organizing everyday—whether it’s one box a day or one a week, setting an achievable goal is the best way to tackle the job. (You can also hire professional organizers to help you settle in quickly too!).

06. When in doubt, just ask

We're here to guide you throughout the entire process. We're your support system and will connect you with the right people to help every step of the way.

Although moving can be stressful, a new home is a new chapter in your story, full of new opportunities, and we love getting to be a part of it.
